  1. Tom, I feel your pain. I have frequently been turned down when I properly submitted my last name.

I guess we both know where their minds are…

  2. Tom, I, too, feel your pain. It took me a while to realize that messages I was sending via one of my email accounts (jimsleep@aol.com) were winding up in people’s Spam folders because our artificially intelligent moral guardians assumed that “jimsleep” must be pornographic. (jimsleeper12@gmail.com) seems to get through much more easily…
Of course, the Commonwealth of Virginia is an even more careful keeper of our decency than AOL is!

  3. In 1967 or 1968, Massachusetts cale out with “vanity plates.” So, naturally, I decided to apply for “YALE69.”
I was turned down for similar reasons. My father was amused and outraged, and he offered to write a letter to the Registrar that went something like this:

“My son has applied for a Massachusetts vanity plate, ‘YALE69,’ He is a student at Yale and anticipates graduating with the class of 1969. He has received a letter denying his application. My question is, ‘if this request is denied, how should I explain it to my wife?'”

I soon received the plates in the mail.

  4. I frequently get refused subscription when I use my last name as my user name.

I also remember when I was paged at a chemical engineering lab I worked at in the summer between Freshman and Sophomore year: “Harry Fourdicks, please call the operator”. Imagine the reaction of the people around me when they heard that…

    Regards,

    1. Gosh, is it a poor user interface to the “reply to an article mechanism” where the invitation to reply comes before the listing of existing replies or my aging memory being embarrassingly exposed by just one month between my similar relplies? Probably both.
