Last Call for First Wives
According to our Class Survey, 32% of survey respondents have been married twice, and 4% three times or more. Most of these first marriages ended in divorce. I thought it might be interesting to get the perspective from our first wives — the ones who met us, married us, and later divorced us (or vice versa).
So, I’ve created a simple survey for our First Wives … exploring the role Yale played on the marriage and on us. It’s anonymous, and I’ll anonymize any identifying details in order to get candor and keep everything private.
If you are still in touch with any first wife (yours or any other), please do either one of these two things:
- Give me your ex-wife’s name and email address so I can send her an email similar to the below, or
- Send her an email saying something like:
Hi, ______
This is a little unusual, but as we approach our 50th Reunion this summer, one of my Yale classmates, Brian Ibsen, is collecting observations from our ex-wives about what role Yale may have had on me, you and our relationship. It’s anonymous and only 8 questions. See https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XZR2JKK.
Brian plans to compile results, make sure there are no identifying details, do some analysis and create a summary report for the Reunion. He would like all survey responses submitted by the end of March. (He’ll send you a copy of his report privately if you want.)
If you have any questions or want to be interviewed for this project, Brian invites you to contact him directly at Brian Ibsen 625westmadison@gmail.com
If you are amenable, please click on the link above and take the survey. Thanks.

Please do this right now while you are thinking of it. I’m hoping to get all responses back by February 28th. I’ll write up my report for you in March.
Thanks so much for doing this. We may find some interesting patterns.
