Gary Gene Vujnovich – 50th Reunion Essay
Gary Gene Vujnovich
Date of Death: 7-Feb-2008
College: Davenport
(This memorial with a remembrance from Bob Horvitz appeared in the May/June 2008 Class Notes.)
Gary Vujnovich died on February 7, 2008. Gary graduated from George Washington University Law School after Yale. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Carpenter, and two children. He was devoted to his family and friends.
Bob Horvitz writes: I was part of Gary’s rooming group in Davenport. Gary was modest and shy—witty in a sort of bleak way—a thoroughly good person but sad. Many years later when he was living alone in a suburb of Washington, DC, I visited him and he was the same but more so. I believe he became a teacher and had already survived a bout of cancer. But that visit was long enough ago that I can’t be sure of any details.
From Don Lewis: Gary was my roommate in Davenport for one year and a member of a group of friends for several years. He was a kind and somewhat shy person who was not pushy around strangers but very generous, fun, and funny once you got familiar. He adopted a street cat who was a challenge to maintain in our suite. He did not drink or try the drugs that were so prevalent in the ’60s, but he was never judgmental about those who did. We were both philosophy majors but did not have long theoretical debates, probably because Gary was never pushy about his opinions and was a very private studier. I regret that we did not stay in touch after graduation yet I still miss his presence.
