Great Name Choice
While not a Calhoun College alumnus, I do appreciate that a name change is jarring for some. However, I want to say that I am delighted with the choice of Grace Murray Hopper. I met her once, near the end of her life, when she spoke to a computer group in the Boston area. She was an important pioneer in the field. President Salovey’s letter described some of her accomplishments but left out some. She programmed a solution to the “implosion problem” for the Manhattan Project, running on a very primitive digital computer. She started and headed the software department of the Eckert-Mauchly Corporation, which developed the Univac computer. When I saw her she was wearing her US Navy uniform (retired), of which she was very proud.
