Major Delays on I-95 Predicted for Reunion Weekend
The bridge carrying US 1 across I-95 at Exit 9 of the Connecticut Turnpike, in Stamford, will be replaced this coming weekend, causing all traffic on I-95 to be diverted. (Google map of the affected interchange is here.)
Here is how traffic will be diverted from 11 PM Friday night thru 5 AM Monday morning:
I-95. Those familiar with how congested I-95 can get on weekends know this will cause major delays. One classmate, who lives nearby, predicts MAJOR delays. “Even a normal Sunday heading into New York is stop-and-go for miles,” he told us.
“If people want to come this way, avoid it,” said state trooper Sgt. Robert Derry. “It’s really going to be a gridlocked situation.”
MERRITT. The Merritt Parkway is also busy, especially on Sundays, and will also likely be jammed up.
TRAINS. Trains also offer a solution: Metro North and Amtrak will be running and you can get to the NY Airports from the city: https://www.nycairporter.com/
RESCHEDULE? Those traveling to NYC airports for Sunday afternoon departures will face a big challenge. If you have a refundable fare, you may want to consider staying an extra day in New Haven and flying out on Monday.
I-84. I have a flight late afternoon on Sunday, and I’m planning on going via Rt. 34 and I-84 … (route) … but even that might be jammed up. I’m gonna allow lots of extra time.
Anyway, forewarned is forearmed – Yalies, do your thing: Problem-solve!!

Going to Newark? Take the train from New Haven to Liberty. And if you are fortunate enough to be flying United from Terminal C, leave time for dinner at Surf, the restaurant across from Gate 82 (or 84). The best sushi in the city. For Real.

Thank, Wayne, for the heads-up. We are flying back to San Antonio out of JFK late Sunday afternoon and it sounds like I-84 might be a good option. I’ll stand by for later advice from those of my classmates who better know the landscape. See you at the reunion!
Steve, I-84 is a very round about way to get to JFK from New Haven……For something different, look into the ferry (passengers and cars) from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson on Long Island. And I am also now living in San Antonio. See you in New Haven…
