Yale Alumni Association dropped its support for the Class Listserv at the end of 2024. The Class decided to host our own listservs. Currently, there are three listservs open to all classmates. These three listserv addresses are:
- Everyone@Yale1969.org – for general announcements, personal news, remembrances, class events, obits, etc. — no politicking, proselytizing or fundraising, please.
- Discussions@Yale1969.org – for discussions on topics related to Yale, our class, or classmates. General political discussions should be conducted on the Unrestricted listserv, as defined below.
- Unrestricted@Yale1969.org – a wider range of topics, including politics, society, culture, moral philosophy, and other issues relevant to this community.
Think of the three listservs like this:
Additional Special Interest Groups (SIGs):
If some classmates want to establish additional listservs for other groups of classmates—say a sports team, a college, an extracurricular activity, a singing group, a senior society or any informal group (like the “Blue Notes” who performed at the last reunion), we can easily create and support a specialized listserv for that group. It can be open to any interested classmates, or it can be “members-only,” like a sports team or a senior society.
All we need are the names and emails of members to initially add, as well as the name of the “Moderator” who will approve others who may request to join (or be invited to join) the list. Just contact us for more information at support@Yale1969.org
Content Guidelines
Do’s (Best Practices)
- Content: Be concise, start new threads with clear subject lines, restrict messages to one subject per email, avoid abbreviations and SHOUTING.
- Tone: Be respectful. Keep criticisms constructive. Maintain civility. Avoid ad hominem attacks and overwrought, emotionally intense attacks.
- Replies:. Reply to sender only unless everyone needs to see your reply; then reply to the list.
- Previous Message: Don’t attach copy the entire previous message when replying, Quote only the relevant portion of messages you respond to.
- Social Overhead: Avoid messages like “me too” or “thank you.” They don’t contribute to the conversation and just clutter up the Inbox. Feel free to send those to the author personally.
- New Topics: Sometimes you want to make a related, but clearly separate point. In that case, change the subject line and make clear what you intend. Best to keep one thread only for one subject.
- Reply to Digest: When responding to a Digest/Summary email, be sure to change the subject to match that of the original message.
- Signature: Keep your signature concise, or delete it altogether.
- Attachments: Avoid sending attachments; better to park the item online and link to it if possible.
- Latency: Respond quickly (preferably within 2-3 days) to develop conversation and make others feel welcome.
- Attribution: Provide proper attribution when sharing content created by others.
- Relevance: Topics should be relevant to scope of the listserv, defined above.
Don’ts
- No hate speech or content that targets individuals based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristics.
- Don’t share content that violates the law — defamation, obscenity, threat, fraud, CSAM, copyright or IP rights, or other unlawful speech.
- No soliciting or fundraising.
- Don’t share private information about yourself or others without explicit permission.
- Don’t spam the forum with excessive posts, advertisements, or irrelevant content.
- No personal attacks or harassment of other community members
- Avoid inflammatory language designed to provoke negative reactions from others.
