The Lunatic Fringe was a Yale mixer band that existed for one brief semester in the fall of 1966 but had several distinguished alumni. Kent Bicknell—originally in the Class of 1969 who graduated in 1970—fronted the band on lead vocal and harmonica, joined at times by upperclassman John Carney on lead vocal and acoustic guitar.  Other members were Tinker Sawyer (’70) on lead guitar, Adam Rowen (’70) on bass, Rick Blum (’70) on organ, John O’Leary (’69) on drums—and perhaps others whom time has forgotten.  (There was also a local New Haven crooner, Nathan, who came along to do one or two R&B hits.)

Given the music on the radio at the time, the band did plenty of Stones’ covers, which Kent sang, and several Beatles’ tunes from Revolver, which John Carney sang.  Below are some songs from a live tape of a mixer, with Kent singing lead.  Alas, the band’s 15-minute version of “Desolation Row” (a special treat for dancers!) was lost to history.
