It can still happen! We have been informed via the New York Times that Doug Ousley was recently married. He married Dana Fern at the Church of the Incarnation in New York City, where Doug is the rector. The couple were set up on a blind date in April 2011. According to the Times, Ms. Fern was impressed by Doug’s ability to speak fluent French and Italian. (And I thought all I had to do was brush up my Shakespeare.) Best wishes to the happy couple!
Mike Baum e-writes: “Hoping to see plenty of classmates at the 45th, including maybe some of you guys who haven’t attended reunions before? If you think ‘reunions, bah humbug’—that was sort of my attitude till I actually attended one, our 25th, where I was surprised how I enjoyed picking up conversations with men I hadn’t seen in decades, but with whom I had just as much in common as in the ’60s. Come and see. Don’t wait till the 50th—we might not all still be here. We’re not getting any younger—at least I’m not—and we shouldn’t miss a chance to connect with old friends from such an important time in our lives. (And yes, my wife enjoys them, too!)
“Myself, I’m still doing what I was as of the 40th: marketing consulting for organizations that supply curriculum and technology to education. Primarily that is the K-12 segment, but I’ve gotten increasingly involved in early childhood and may have some news to share in June to those interested. Hoping to keep the business going a couple more years, maybe to age 70, then spend the rest of my years writing and spoiling our grandchildren, not necessarily in that order.”
News from Dues: Tom Guterbock writes: “Still directing UVA’s Center for Survey Research which I started 25 years ago. Started singing barbershop harmony a few years ago, and having a ball with that. Daughters now range in age from 12 to 37, all doing well; younger ones being continuously chauffeured by Bernice and me, to the ice rink or the soccer fields. Am trying to learn ice dancing, but progress is only barely discernable. Looking forward to our 45th!”
John Charles Crockett Sr. passed away peacefully at home on December 10, 2013, after bravely battling cancer. He began his career as a financial analyst at Mellon Bank and moved on to senior positions at C+S Bank and Beacon Group. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed golfing, kayaking, trains, building model railroads, and playing cards. He read voraciously and traveled extensively. He is survived by a son and daughter and three grandchildren. John will be dearly missed by his family and friends around the country. (From the obituary in the Kansas City Star.) Your scribe has no other information on John except what I gleaned from our class book: originally in the class of 1968, John was in Pierson, Zeta Psi, and worked on the Yale Banner. He married Mary Elbin (Albertus Magnus ’69) at New Haven in 1968.
Update on Peter Burr: His disability, reported in a previous issue, was a result of Agent Orange absorbed by him in Vietnam.
Note from scribe: See you at the reunion!
