The Results Are In!
OK, let’s cut to the chase:
Here are the results of our survey, asking Classmates to name their favorite artist, album, and song of the 1960s. We had over 100 replies.
The Beatles wiped out the competition in the first two categories. They received 33% of the votes for Favorite Artist, with Bob Dylan a distant second at 9%. The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, and The Temptations were tied for third at 5% each. Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles each received 4%.
Sgt Pepper grabbed 21% of the vote for Favorite Album. Abbey Road and The White Album, both by The Beatles, came in second and third receiving 10% and 8% respectively. Beatles’ albums in the aggregate amassed 54% of the vote—including Rubber Soul, Meet the Beatles, Revolver, and Please Please Me (a UK release).
The Favorite Song category was very competitive. “Like a Rolling Stone” won 7% of the vote, barely beating out Dylan’s “Blowing in the Wind” at 5%. There was a third-place tie at 4% among “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys, “People Get Ready” by The Impressions, “Satisfaction” and “Sympathy for the Devil” by The Rolling Stones, “The Times They Are A-Changin’” by Bob Dylan, and “The Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles.
Overall I’d say our classmates showed remarkably good taste in their choices. Well, except for the write-in vote for Lonnie Donegan’s “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight”!
