Paul Francis Malamud, October 26, 2022
Paul Francis Malamud, class of 1969, passed away from complications in heart surgery on October 26, 2022. Born in New York City in 1947, he moved with his parents, Ann and Bernard Malamud, to Corvallis, Oregon, in 1949. Though he would go on to live in Vermont, in Cambridge, and eventually in Washington, D.C., thoughts of Corvallis inspired wistfulness in him until the end of his life.
He received a Ph.D. in English literature from Columbia University, then served the U.S. Department of State for over thirty years. Throughout that time, he traveled widely and read more widely still, maintaining a fascination with 18th-century philosophy, ancient currency, and most of all with poetry; he translated poems from Latin and Old French, and wrote many of his own to accompany them.
He is survived by his sister, Janna Smith, and her husband, David, of Massachusetts; his nephew, Peter, of New York; and his niece, Sadie, of Oregon. We remember him tenderly.
