At Yale we were trained primarily for verbal expression, but the world (especially the web) is increasingly visual.  This primer will help you prepare your photos for your 50th reunion essays.

The Rudiments

Composition – You know what looks good — proper framing, good contrast, balanced weight, smart focus (or blur) and a thoughtful use of colors (or cool use of black and white!).  Start with a great photo and remember that most “snapshots” will need to be cropped.  See “cropping tool” below.

Size – The size of a photo is measured in pixels.  The printed book will require large, high-resolution photos larger than 600 pixels on the longest side.  Larger is better.  Our editors will re-size the pictures for both the printed book and the online version.

Subject Matter – Use whatever photos complement your Essay!  It could be a picture of you, alone or with your family; and that picture could be a simple selfie or a more formal portrait done by a photographer.  Pictures for the essay could include something showing an important inspiration, part of your life’s work, an important interest, or virtually anything that would enhance the points you are trying to make in your essay.  For example, if you addressed a period of depression in your life and thought this picture represented how you felt, use it! Most of the time, you’ll use your own photos, but if you use someone else’s images, make sure to get permission.
