Playing The Carillon, Redux
I climbed the 150 or so steps to Harkness Tower’s bell chamber for a reunion weekend recital. I’m a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs advisory board so I’ve gotten to play the bells often over the years, but this time it was special: I played a Bach duet with the Guild’s outgoing chair, Joy Chiu ’19. Fifty years may separate our classes, but at that moment we were both a tempo.
Then, I invited our classmate and Whiffenpoof Geoff Anderson to strike the hour on our largest bell, which he did with his usual musical aplomb.
Our classmate and erstwhile carillonneur Rick Lannamann and his wife Kate joined my reunion guest Ray Erickson ’70 PhD for a look at the bells with Joy. Ray was my freshman adviser, and it was a delight to have him join our Wright Hall entryway-mates for the weekend.
