Campus Walking Tour
Brad Gascoigne:
I took the walking tour at 9AM Saturday morning, starting at Phelps Gate and progressing to J. E. and Branford courtyards. There is a lovely sculpture in J.E.’s courtyard which I really liked. Did you know that Jonathan Edwards matriculated at Yale at age 13, graduated first in his class, married the daughter of a wealthy New Haven merchant, and served as a minister in Northampton, MA and then Stockbridge, MA before returning to New Haven. Seven of Yale’s first eight presidents were ministers. In one of the president’s papers, I believe Timothy Dwight’s, there is a notation that the congregation “wanted another glass.” Our tour guide deciphered this to mean that another sermon was desired as an hour glass was turned upside-down at the start of the morning’s sermon and sermons typically lasted an hour! They wanted a second hour!
