How I Got Into Yale?
Sorting through some memorabilia from the summer of 1957, I noticed a picture from Poly Lodge at Camp Dudley that made me smile. Then I noticed the name of the counselor pictured here, at the cabin next door. Recognize him?

Scott Herstin hosted five fellow Davenporters —Ned Culver, Brad Davenport, Dave Howorth, Dick Tucker, Harry Wise, plus spouses and fiancées—for a week on Kiawah Island. My report: Scott is living in Naples, FL, where he takes an interest in Everglades restoration and reads Randy Wayne White novels. Ned splits the year between homes in Charleston, SC, and Wayland, MA, and devotes his time to playing bridge and golf (both badly) and doting on his first…

The reunion committee tapped me to be “College Captain Manager,” a position that has let me learn, through our college captains, some reasons classmates give for not coming to the reunion. I want to address those. “Reason” No. 1: “I don’t like what Yale has become, and I don’t want to support it.” You’re not supporting Yale by attending the reunion. In the first place, you’re not supporting Yale financially. Yale breaks even on reunions,…
The Reunion Committee made some recent announcements about the upcoming reunion. They fleshed out more of the details, asked us to preregister online and published the sequence of events leading up to the reunion itself on May 30-June 2. Click through to preregister and learn more.
At the Harvard Class of 1937’s 50th reunion, E.J. Kahn, Jr., and Frank Goodhue met for the first time. They became the best of friends for the rest of their lives. David Howorth sees no reason why friendships like that can’t be formed at our 50th.
The following people have volunteered to be “College Captains” for each college. They are an extension to the Reunion Committee, and they help with outreach to find Missing Classmates, answer questions about, and encourage participation in, the Class Survey, the 50th Reunion ClassBook and the website, and encourage attendence at the reunion. If you have an interest in serving as a College Captain, contact David Howorth. Jean-Pierre Jordan, (BK) John Adams, (BK) Keith Nelson, (BR) Rick Drost,…
Each year, Davenport published a booklet, Davenport Rogue’s Gallery, with candid shots of D’porters as commentary on life in the college that year. As part of our “digital archiving” project, this is the first Rogue’s Gallery to be scanned and presented on Yale1969.org.
Once a year, Davenport College had a duplicate bridge tournament, with about 30 pairs competing. Although I was later to run this game, when I arrived at Yale I had never played a session of duplicate. I decided to enter, partnered with one of my Farnam entrymates and fellow duplicate-virgin, Greg Thomas. One of the Farnam freshman counselors tried to give us tips on duplicate strategy, although in retrospect I realize he wasn’t much wiser…
