Davenport Rogue’s Gallery 1967-68

At the end of every school year, each member of Davenport College received a copy of Davenport Rogue’s Gallery, a booklet containing candid shots taken during the year – shots not just of one rogue, as the title might suggest, but of a large number of us rogues. Scott Herstin, DC ’69, recently found his copy for the year 1967-68, and it’s reproduced here.

It may help non-Davenporters looking at the pictures to know about a few Davenport traditions:

  1. Davenport held an annual Mardi Gras party about the time of the real Mardi Gras. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes in various categories.
  2. The Davenport common room had a skittles table. (I believe it’s technically a “bar billiards table,” but everyone called it skittles.) Many Davenporters became proficient at the game, and we had an annual tournament, as seen in the Rogue’s Gallery.
  3. On College Weekend, Davenport held the Hudson Strode Memorial Games, most of which involved competitive beer-drinking. The games that didn’t involve beer required tactile interaction with one’s date. And some games required both.

    1. This is great to see but my attempt at a moustache is really embarassing.

Historical note: I won the skittles tournament the following year, beating Robert Dahl on the final shot.

  1. A year late, I just saw this. Blonde woman in big paisley jacket on about page 39. My back is to the camera, with my hand…I married her in Sept ’69. Still married to her.
