We are looking for pictures (especially!), document, flyers, audio tapes, posters, publications, etc., etc.– memorabilia, generally. We want to digitize them and use them in the ClassBook and on the website. So NOW is the time to dig out old scrapbooks, shoeboxes or other stored materials from Back In The Day … and get it to us for preservation, use and return to you (if you want the item/hard copy back).
Kingman wrote a letter to the Director of Admissions detailing what he was looking for in new Yale freshmen. See his articulate, well-written guidance addressing things like leadership, public vs. private school, morality, “legacy”, diversity, well-rounded-ness, athletics and the like. This letter was used by Admissions officers and in Alumni Schools Committee training for many decades.
Each year, Davenport published a booklet, Davenport Rogue’s Gallery, with candid shots of D’porters as commentary on life in the college that year. As part of our “digital archiving” project, this is the first Rogue’s Gallery to be scanned and presented on Yale1969.org.
“To Be A Man” was a film commissioned by the Admissions Office in 1966, and it features many of our classmates. We now have a copy you can watch right here.
In 2016, a Yale student wrote a 25-page paper for History 134 (“Yale and America”) on Charles Apel (JE ’69). Apel was an “early adopter” of LSD, marijuana, etc., before dropping out in ’67. Cameos by Timothy Leary, Janis Joplin, … and the campus police.

It was a year of constant activity; it was a year of dreamlike sojourn in a quadrangle housing three centuries of tradition and not an iota of experience. It was freshman year, a time to discover what Yale was about. It was supposed to be about education….
