Maddie Hoffmann
Class of 1969 Scholar, 2018

Madeline Hoffman holds the Class of 1969 Scholarship for 2018-19. Yale reports that: “Maddie gained valuable experience as a high energy physics intern at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, in Livermore, California.

Back on campus for her senior year, this four-time honoree has decided to double-major in chemistry and engineering sciences (mechanical). Describing her research in Yale’s Ganim Laboratory, she writes ‘I’m working on developing an electrochemical cell that can be integrated into the group’s setup for optical trapping experiments for single molecules. This can be used to make force measurements and create a spectrum.’

Beyond academics, Maddie has captained the Yale club swimming team….Following graduation, she plans to work abroad for a year before pursuing a Ph.D. in chemistry. She can be reached at madeline.hoffman@yale.edu.” Impressive.

The Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund had a market value as of 6/30/2018 of $445,975. Also impressive. Don Galligan notes: “Few classmates know of the origin of the Fund and, I fear, many assume that it is something that Yale created.  In fact, I and a handful of classmates created the Fund in the run up to our last reunion.   As we approach our 50th reunion and as classmates are considering gifts, I would be grateful if you would make classmates aware that the Fund is a giving opportunity that will provide a tribute to our class long after we have all passed on.”  (Editor Note: See the full story, and links for giving, here.)

PBS News Hour

From Terry Benson: “I am now the principal associate director of the PBS NewsHour Weekend Program, and occasionally the director. Who says you can’t teach an older dog new tricks? And I have my first grandchild—a granddaughter now seven months old.”

50th Reunion:  Right around the corner!!!  The latest news about our program and attendees will be posted on the Class Website at yale1969.org. There will be lots of Yale-wide events, exclusive 1969 events and sessions, and plenty of time to talk to that old friend you have wondered about for the last five or 50 years.  For me, there has never been a reunion where I didn’t make new friends, too!

The 1969 Classbook should be in your hands by the time you read this. If it is half as good as I think it will be, it will be terrific. Here is what Yeats said:

“When you are old and gray and full of sleep, and nodding by the fire, take down this book and slowly read, and dream of the soft look your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep.”
