Derek Performing At Yale

As the obituary for Derek Huntington (PC ’69) in the New York Times said upon his death in 2011

Music was always a vital part of Derek’s life. Throughout the 1970’s he was a professional singer, songwriter, music producer and sound engineer, living and performing in Los Angeles, Boston and across New England.”

That’s an understatement, as those who knew Derek at Yale … and later in Cambridge … could testify.  Not only was he a gifted singer/songwriter, as you can hear for yourself below, but he helped countless others develop their music for commercial audiences.  Among other things, he produced Stormin’ Norman & Suzy’s first album and John O’Leary’s first EP.

In the 70s, Derek moved to California briefly to pursue his music, and there are some stories there that won’t make it into this report.  A good time was had by all, we hear.

In the early 80s, he moved to NYC and started a successful residential construction business, ZZZ Carpentry.  When the INS tried to deport his assistant for being an undocumented immigrant, Derek—as would be expected—went to the mat for his employee and won his freedom, which made local news.  33 years since its founding Derek’s business lives on.

At Derek’s memorial service, classmate Tom Weber said it best:  “You liked to be with Derek. Yet that was only half: in his company, you liked yourself.” (Tom’s eloquent eulogy deserves to be read in its entirety here.)

The details in this In Memoriam post has some good infomation about his post-musical career, some remembrances from classmates and this lovely picture of him and his wife six years before his death.  It’s worth reading.  He was a good man … and an even better musician.

  1. Thanks for this, John. After the Memorial Service, I spent the winter listening to D’s music. Since I had known him since we were five years old, I had sung with him casually (besides playing on his midfield in lacrosse and fished with him for sixty years or so), but I hadn’t followed his music career.
The thing is that when I listened, I realized that he, as in lax, as in fishing, was so good at everything he chose to do. He was extraordinary.
The cycle of songs shows that.
