As the bandleader/pianist for The Homesick John O’Leary band in the 70s and 80s or as the singer/songwriter/guitarist in recent decades, John has opened for acts such as Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Richie Havens, Tower of Power, Michael Bolton, and NRBQ.

The tracks below are two of John’s songs performed by oleary&lalli, a Boston-based, folk-rock duo from the early 2000s.  The second tune, “I Long to Live on Long Island,” is a studio-enhanced live performance that parodies the archetypal lounge gig.

Tips For Listening: If you click on any song, it will play, and the next song will “autoplay.” If you want to save a song, right click on it and “save target as.”

“Learning by Heart” features world-class sidemen including:

  • Drummer Dave Mattacks, who was a member of Fairport Convention and has recorded with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Elton John, Jimmy Page, and other well-known Brits.
  • Bassist Richard Gates, who has recorded with or accompanied dozens of top-tier singer-songwriters like Richard Thompson, Ellis Paul, Patty Larkin, Paula Cole, and Suzanne Vega.
  • Guitarist Kevin Barry, who has played with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, Peter Wolf, and Emmylou Harris.

When people ask O’Leary how he’s able to attract such talented players, he explains his somewhat heterodox business model as follows: “I pay them.”

Here’s a clip from John’s appearance on Tom Snyder’s Tomorrow Show on NBC in 1980. Snyder played a portion of John’s single, “The Running Game,” which was the theme song for John’s independent campaign for US President.

  1. John–
Good to read your name again and hear your music.
I thought about Randy and the Morning a year or so ago. He was good enough to write back. He looked a bit worn, but it was good to hear from him

    1. Great to hear, David. Randy is still in fine form and is still playing the Village in NY. The Morning gets together occasionally for various Yale reunions and his singing sounds even better to me than 50 years ago.
