Judge Myron Thompson first visited Yale Law School when he was 15 years old, invited by a YLS student-volunteer who taught Myron during a 1963 Freedom Summer enrichment program. Owing to Myron’s slow recovery from polio, that student carried Myron around to show him the colleges, encouraging him to apply. In a 37 year career as a federal district court judge, Myron ruled Roy Moore’s Ten Commandments monument unconstitutional and struck down Alabama’s restrictive abortion law, among other opinions. Now he receives Yale Law’s Award of Merit.
Vincent Scully spent virtually all his life in New Haven, as a star student at Hillhouse High School, Yale College, and Yale Grad School — teaching at Yale from 1947 until 2014. A major scholar and gifted teacher, Scully insired us. Read the comments that your Classmates left at the bottom of this remembrance … and leave some of your own.
You’ll get an invitation to the Class Survey shortly. Here’s the behind-the-scenes story about how the survey came into being and the thought that went into the survey design. Lucky enough, one of our Classmates is a leading expert in creating valid and reliable surveys!
Discover magazine asked our own Jeff Wheelwright to write about a UCLA study of the aging brain. Given that his own brain is aging, he enrolled in the study and offers a first-hand perspective.
The resulting article was published in the October issue of Discover. It weaves together a report on what is happening, generally, to all of us, and what, specifically, Jeff experienced.

In 2016, a Yale student wrote a 25-page paper for History 134 (“Yale and America”) on Charles Apel (JE ’69). Apel was an “early adopter” of LSD, marijuana, etc., before dropping out in ’67. Cameos by Timothy Leary, Janis Joplin, … and the campus police.
The key to a great experience on this site is great content. And the key to great content is finding great stories. It might be “News” like Matt Flynn’s run for Governor of Wisconsin or it might be “Potpourri” like Tom McNamee’s work protecting Grizzly Bears. We need “stringers” in each college to spot great stories like these.
Class Historian Hundt explains how the Class Survey (coming soon) was designed. Our answers will support an entertaining presentation at the Reunion and in the 50th Reunion ClassBook.
How will you know when Classmates add content to the website? Well, for new posts, you’ll now get this “summary” of all recent posts in an emailed newsletter. Read more to see all the controls and filters available at the bottom of your “edit profile” page.
Our own Matt Flynn (ES) is running for Governor of Wisconsin. He faces a real fight against incumbent Scott Walker, but has a strong chance for victory in 2018.
