After graduating from Yale in math, I started grad school at Berkeley. However, I dropped out and wasted several years in the radical movement in Berkeley and Oakland. At 26 I went back to grad school at Berkeley.

About 25 years ago I made an accidental mathematical discovery that captured my imagination. Though it hasn’t been good for my career, following up on this discovery has been a focus of my professional life.

For more than 20 years I’ve been doing data analysis at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, virtually the same thing as the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry. Fortunately, this position allows me to spend some time doing my own research. As a “glide path to retirement,” I’ve started reducing the length of my workweek.
