Carlos Nicholas MacKechnie Hawkin, May 22, 2023

Nicholas (aka Nick) Hawkin was a bit older than the rest of us, and he carried himself with a grace and wit that were truly enviable.  His father was an Oxford grad and a British diplomat assigned to various offices in Mexico and South America.  His mother was Peruvian, and Nick was educated in South America and at boarding schools in England:  Elston Hall School, Nottinghamshire, England, and Ampleforth College, Ampleforth, England; Universite d’Aix-en-Provence, Jan., 1964 to May, 1964; and Universidad de los Andes, Oct., 1965 to May, 1966.

He transferred into Yale in September, 1966 and graduated as a Spanish major.

He supplemented his writing career by teaching, lecturing and translating various texts.

His 50th Reunion Essay offers wonderful examples of his humility and humor both.

Nicholas Hawkin
Nick was born in the UK but was educated, lived and worked in a number of countries in Europe and South and North America. His mother was Peruvian and he was trilingual from childhood due to his upbringing and peripatetic young life.

He worked as a translator and a teacher and in the later part of his life became a self-employed lecturer and a Museum tour guide.

Nick was creative and enthusiastic in anything he undertook and was loved for his sense of humour and kindness and respected for his intellect and talents. He was a film and a music buff and a keen photographer. He married in Nerja in the south of Spain and spent his happiest years living there, before moving to the UK with his wife, where he recently passed away. He is greatly missed.
